Not a bad year down at the allotment. Had more time to spare to enjoy growing my own fruit and vegetables. It’s the first year that I have had a greenhouse full of delicious produce. The cherry tomatoes are to die for and I have had so many cucumbers that there was no one left to give them away to. The beetroot in the picture above are mini and the result of thinning the beetroot patch out. I grew three varieties of beans this year including broad beans, a green string bean and a purple string beans (i love to freeze them) The string beans cropped really well for dwarf bush varieties. We were surprised to see the purple variety of bean loose its colour in the blanching process before freezing them. The apples have been the winner this year, approx 40 apples in total. We have already made some apple sauce with some of them and are continuing to enjoy them in our packed lunches through the week.

This years gooseberry harvest was massive. A total of 15lbs in weight all bagged up into 1lb bags and frozen so that we can make crumbles through the winter. The prep took three of us a couple of hours but it was worth it. I always write the date on the bags so that when we go to the freezer for fruit to make deserts we know exactly what day we harvested the fruit.

These babies are going out today. It’s a brilliant day to get loads of work done at my plot. I wonder if Mark is going to bring me some dinner?

Lovely afternoon spent on the plot. Planted out a row of peas and another row of broad beans. All the parsnips are out and I’ve sown a row of Autumn King carrots.

A productive sunny day sowing seeds at the plot. I’m using some bright colourful pots to brighten the place up. Here is a list of what I’ve sown today;
Cauliflower
Purple sprouting broccoli
Sweet peppers
Courgette
Squash
Peas
Oregano
Aubergine
Beef tomato
Plum tomato
Cucumber
Sunflowers- 2 varieties

I was brutal with some of my parsnip pots and tipped them out to see if the seed has germinated…. and guess what they have. So fingers crossed I’ll have some tasty parsnips to see me through autumn and winter.

I also gave my bench a quick coat of green paint and tidied the shed…AGAIN.

Woooo I’ve been given a greenhouse. One of the other plot holders had one in his garden at home and wanted rid of it. We actually carried it through the village- that was something I never thought I’d do. We are going to finish it off on Sunday ready for me to plant in on Monday/Tuesday next week. I’ve taken up two of my 4ft square beds to make room for it. Can’t wait to grow some tomatoes. Planted the first row of broad beans and dug over some more beds. It’s been a really productive week down at the plot, we have managed to give it a good sort out all ready to go.
