Remember those tomato suckers I pulled off of my mature Sweet Million plant? Well they successfully root and I ended up with 11 more plants! I gave 3 away and today I put my two larger ones into containers and my 6 smaller into the ground. I have never grown tomatoes in the ground so it will be interesting to see how they turn out! I never found them wilty in the process of rooting them and I was happy to find lots of healthy roots on all of them.

Spent earth day in the garden.

The blue gold berries tomato plant that I started from baker creek seeds last season survived the winter and is producing fruit for the second season. It’s weaker than my other first season plants and has been ravaged by hornworms while the others are resisting.

Usually I pick the caterpillars off by hand and clip them in half with my pruners, in an attempt to avoid pesticides. Tonight, I was not finding a lot although it was clear there were several, so I tried something new.

I sprayed the whole plant top to bottom with water in an attempt to wash them off. To my surprise, it totally worked! When the water drained from the pot I found at least 12 wriggling in the dirt. Clipped them all and went on with the day.

It’s been a lovely, warm fall.
